Mayor Darnell Waites is a dynamic and visionary leader who has dedicated his life to service. A proud U.S. Army veteran with 27 years of distinguished military service, he served in key leadership roles, including First Sergeant, where he honed his skills in discipline, strategy, and resilience. After retiring from the military, he brought his passion for leadership to the City of Baker, where he worked tirelessly to transform the community and elevate the lives of its residents.
Elected as Mayor in 2016 and re-elected in 2020 and 2024, Mayor Waites has led Baker through some of its most challenging times, including floods, hurricanes, and a global pandemic. Despite these obstacles, his administration has emerged stronger, implementing forward-thinking policies and innovative solutions that have strengthened infrastructure, boosted economic growth, and enhanced public safety. Under his leadership, the city has secured nearly $20 million in funding for critical projects, including road and sidewalk improvements, drainage enhancements, gas and water system upgrades, and the construction of a new fire station and water tower. Baker’s water system has also earned an A+ rating from the Louisiana Department of Health, reflecting the administration’s commitment to excellence.
Economic development has been a driving force in Mayor Waites’ administration. Since 2016, city revenue has increased by 64%, from $7.6 million to $12.5 million, paving the way for sustained growth. For the first time in 30 years, three new subdivisions are under construction, providing much-needed housing opportunities for both new and existing residents. Additionally, new businesses, such as Bennie’s Car Wash & Convenience Store, are expanding the local economy and creating jobs. These efforts have contributed to Baker being named the #1 Safest City in Louisiana in 2023, a testament to the Mayor’s commitment to public safety and community well-being.
Beyond infrastructure and economic growth, Mayor Waites has prioritized quality-of-life initiatives. Under his leadership, Baker has upgraded the Martin Luther King Memorial Park Walking Path, built a state-of-the-art National Fitness Court, and expanded public transportation with the LYNX by CATS Micro-Transit Service. His leadership has also played a key role in securing new urgent care facilities, a senior primary healthcare center and a multimillion-dollar upgrade to Lane Regional Medical Center, ensuring that residents have access to essential medical services. Additionally, through partnerships with LHC and UREC, $1 million has been secured to remodel the homes of senior citizens, disabled and single parent low-income residents, providing better living conditions for families in need.
Mayor Waites firmly believes in collaboration and the power of diverse voices coming together to build a stronger community. He has worked extensively with government agencies, civic organizations, and faith based groups to create a unified and forward-thinking Baker. He serves on numerous influential boards, including the Capital Region Planning Commission, the EBR Parish Communications Board, Baker Chamber of Commerce, Lane Regional Medical Center Board of Commissioners, Louisiana Fire Fighters Board of Directors, Louisiana Municipal Association Executive Board, Louisiana Community Development Authority, and the Louisiana Municipal Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials, where he previously served as President.
With a clear vision for the future, Mayor Waites remains committed to progress, unity, and economic prosperity. His leadership has already propelled Baker to new heights, and with continued dedication, he is determined to build on this momentum. With the City of Baker thriving under Mayor Waites’ leadership, the best is yet to come.
